10 Wakesurfing Tips for Beginners

Wakesurfing is one of the most fun things you can do on the water — and it's more approachable than most people think. Here are 10 tips to get you riding fast.

1. Start with the Right Board

Bigger boards are more stable and easier to learn on. A surf-style or hybrid board in the right size for your weight will make a huge difference on your first day.

2. Use a Short Rope to Get Up

Keep the rope short (around 20–25 feet) when you're learning to get up. Once you're riding comfortably, gradually let more rope out until you can drop it entirely.

3. Keep Your Knees Bent

Bent knees are your best friend. They absorb the choppiness of the wake and keep you balanced. Lock your knees and you'll fall — guaranteed.

4. Look Where You Want to Go

Your body follows your eyes. Look at the horizon or the back of the boat — not down at your feet.

5. Let the Boat Do the Work

When getting up, don't try to stand up too fast. Let the boat pull you to your feet. Keep your arms straight, heels dug in, and just wait for the momentum to lift you.

6. Position Yourself in the Sweet Spot

The "sweet spot" is the area just behind the boat's wake where the wave is pushing hardest. Move your feet toward the tail to slow down, or shift weight forward to speed up and stay in the pocket.

7. Wear the Right Gear

A well-fitting impact vest (like our Wake & Surf Co. Impact Vest) makes falls way more comfortable and keeps you floating. Don't skip it.

8. Boat Speed Matters

Most beginner riders do best around 10–12 mph. Ask your driver to keep it steady — inconsistent speed makes everything harder.

9. Fall Safely

When you fall, try to fall away from the board and cover your head with your arms. Never fall directly onto the board.

10. Have Fun and Be Patient

Most people don't get it on the first try — and that's totally normal. Every session you'll improve. The water is always worth coming back to.
